The PSMLS presents a long-awaited class on the Spanish Civil War, with an overview of the entire war itself and the different forces involved as well as the contribution of American communists to the Republican forces. This class, we will dive into the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the problems therein. We’ll learn about this history of NATO during the Cold War, and how the alliance postured itself against the USSR & Warsaw Pact. Lastly, we will explore the history of NATO within the last ~33 years during the period of American Unipolarity and how NATO exposed itself to not be a defensive organization in the wake of the counter-revolution in the USSR. In the last 10 months, the Peoples School for Marxist-Leninist studies has been doing a series of classes on the History of U.S. Imperialism, going from the origins of US imperialism in the mid-late 1800s all the way up to the present day in 2024. We covered the domestic and international developments and discussed so much history that this series should be regarded as an outline for further research and future classes, and not as an in-depth history. There were 9 episodes in this series, and each one will be linked below with a description of the class. Enjoy and please help us by sharing this education and inviting people to the PSMLS!

Origins, 1800’s-1914

We started with the origins of U.S. Imperialism focusing on the period of the late 19th and early 20th century before the First World War. We covered the development of American capitalism after the American Revolution and the period of massive monopolization succeeding the American Civil War and into the “Guilded Age.” We then covered the Spanish-American War, Annexations of Samoa and Hawaii, Philippine-American War, Banana Wars and more around the turn of the 20th century, leaving the class off at 1914, where we would pick up the next class with the start of the supposed “Great War” of WW1.

World War 1 (and the interwar period), 1914-1939

This class delved into the American intervention in WW1, further development of American imperialism and the role of the United State in the interwar years, where we failed to intervene in the Spanish Civil War, Italian invasion of Ethiopia and . It also briefly covered the socialist response to World War 1 and compared US vs Soviet foreign policy in the years leading up to WW1.

World War 2, 1939-1945

This is the third part of our series on the History of US Imperialism, this time on American Imperialism during and immediately after WW2. During this time the United States was an imperialist power that gained from its participation in, and played a progressive role in, the United Front with other allies, including the Soviet Union, to defeat the fascist Axis powers. We’ll also cover how American businessmen collaborated with the Nazis, and how the United States and other western imperialists absorbed Nazis after the war.

Dawn of the Cold War, 1945-1960

Continuing our series on the History of U.S. Imperialism from where we left off at the end of WW2, we will be delving into the early years of the international struggle between Western Imperialism and the world Communist movement following the end of the Second World War up to 1960. This included happenings domestically, such as severe repression of the Communist movement, the Civil Rights movement and its connection to the Communist movement, and the movement against conscription. This class also covered international events, such as the U.S. military interventions in Greece, Korea, Iran, Guatemala, Cuba and more, as well as the nuclear flashpoints, what was happening in Germany, US-Soviet Relations etc.

Height of the Cold War, 1960-1975

This class explores U.S. Imperialism in the 15 year period between 1960 and 1975, from the US response to the Cuban Revolution all the way to the Fall of Saigon, during the Height of the Cold War, where tensions were at their highest, battles were at their bloodiest, coups were at their most plentiful and the world came the closest to nuclear conflict.

End of the Cold War, 1975-1991

This class covers the events and developments between 1975 and 1990, the supposed end of the Cold War. We’ll cover the interventions in Grenada, Libya, Panama and more, as well as other interference abroad, such as the Iran-Contra Affair, the propping up of the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, and the extent of US involvement with the counter-revolution throughout the Eastern Bloc.

Rise of American Unipolarity, 1991-2005

With the last class leaving us at the end of the Cold War and the counter-revolution in the Soviet Union, we will now cover the subsequent rise of American unipolarity. This class spans from 1991-2005. First we will address the counter-revolution in the USSR and counter-revolutions across the world at the beginning of the 1990’s, as well as US/NATO intervention in Iraq, Kuwait, Bosnia and more during the decade. The second section will cover the September 11th terrorist attacks and the beginning of the so-called “War on Terror” with the launch of invasions in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as expanded intervention abroad. Lastly we will address the domestic and trade issues of the time, such as NAFTA, the PATRIOT ACT, the Democratic Party change under Clinton and more.

Height of American Unipolarity, 2005-2020

This class covered events from 2005 to 2020. This includes the various wars and interventions under the second term of George W. Bush, and under the presidencies of Barack Obama and Donald Trump. We will touch on Libya, Syria, Yemen, Donbas, and more. We will also address the domestic conditions during this time, such as the repression against whistleblowers like Julian Assange, the 2008 financial crisis, the immigration crisis, civil rights struggles and more. This class is the second to last in our nine class series on U.S. Imperialism.

Fall of American Unipolarity, 2020-Present Day

This covers events and developments from 2020 to the present day. It focuses on the failure of American Imperialism abroad and the return of multipolarity in the world. This is an incredible milestone for our PSMLS as we complete a nine class series on U.S. Imperialism, starting from the very origins of it in the late 19th Century all the way up to the present moment.

This class is the SERIES FINALE in our series on the History of U.S. Imperialism, with a class on the Fall of American Unipolarity! This covers events and developments from 2020-present day and focuses on the failure of American Imperialism abroad and the rise of multipolarity in the world once again. This is an incredible milestone for our PSMLS as we complete a 9 class series on U.S. Imperialism, starting from the very origins of it in the late 19th Century all the way up to the present moment. We’ve produced an incredible outline of events for comrades to do further study on and for future PSMLS classes to tackle more in depth. We would like to end off this years Black History Month by providing you with our content related to the Black struggle. At the Peoples School for Marxist-Leninist Studies, we seek to explore the history of the Black struggle and the involvement of communists, white, black and brown, in that struggle. Racism is still a present issue in our current society and we as Marxist-Leninists must analyze this history and the present conditions of the Black working class in America if we seek to overcome it. Furthermore, as Karl Marx put it in Capital “Labor in the white skin can never free itself as long as labor in the black skin is branded.” Here are classes and narrations from previous years that touch on the Black struggle:

Classes

Black Communists of the 20th Century – Goes over the famous Black Communists of the 20th Century and their contributions to the communist movement and the Black struggle.

(We have had other classes on the Black struggle but either do not have the recording due to wreckers having stole it or we’re still processing the recording into a finished video and it will be uploaded soon (as in the case of the 3 classes on black issues this month).)

Narrations

Black Liberation & the USSR by Paul Robeson – The People’s School for Marxist-Leninist Studies presents a 1949 speech by comrade and former CPUSA member Paul Robeson on a celebration of the 32nd anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution. In this speech, Comrade Robeson eloquently explains what the Soviet Union means to him as a black person and as a worker. This speech was originally published in pamphlet form by New Century Publishers in January of 1950.

For the Emancipation of Black People from Imperialism – The People’s School for Marxist-Leninist Studies presents a July 1929 report to the 2nd World Congress of the League Against Imperialism at Frankfort, Germany, by comrade James W. Ford. This speech particularly highlights the relationship between the toiling Black peoples around the world and the effects of the imperialist WWI.

The Communist Vol. II, “The Crisis of the Black Panther Party” – The Peoples School for Marxist-Leninist Studies presents a reading of “The Crisis of the Black Panther Party” wrote by comrade Henry Winston in 1973 as part of his work entitled “Strategy for a Black Agenda: A Critique of New Theories of Liberation in the United States and Africa.” Included as well is a preface to this writing by Jake Fund.

This class is a presentation from the Black Liberation Commission of the PCUSA on Henry Winston’s “Strategy for a Black Agenda.” “The principal focus of the book is a trenchant Marxist-Leninist analysis of neo-Pan-Africanism and Maoism. The similarities of the two ideologies as bourgeois nationalist trends are clearly exposed. Race, instead of class analysis of world events, separatism as opposed to unity, and fanatical anti-Sovietism, are the hallmarks revealing their reactionary essence.” – from the jacket of the book. Two years ago today, a new historical chapter began. After 8 years of UkroNazi fascism in Ukraine following the Euromaidan coup (that itself is turning a decade old), and a genocide in the Donbas against Russian-speaking people by a government that now honors real Nazi collaborators like Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukavitch, the Russian Federation took a bold step and committed to an anti-fascist military campaign against the fascist government of Ukraine. Many in the west, including in the western left, do not understand (or do not want to acknowledge) why this was a necessary action and why this war is a justified war against a fascist country backed by NATO.

At the Peoples School for Marxist-Leninist Studies, we’ve paid great attention to this since way before February 24th, 2022. We have a plethora of classes and videos available on this subject and would like to share them in an effort to provide education to our comrades about Ukraine and show them a perspective they might not have heard fleshed out before.

History of Ukraine Pre-2022

History of Ukrainian Fascism class – covers broad history of Ukrainian nationalism and fascism from ~1918 – Present Day

80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Kiev class – covers the 1943 liberation of Kiev by the Soviet Red Army, drawing parallels to the current war in Ukraine and paying tribute to the Great Patriotic War on such an anniversary.

Babi Yar Massacre in Ukraine film viewing – “Babi Yar: Lessons of History” dates to the 1970s, and it was released in the West in the 1980s. It was originally produced by Soviet filmmakers through the Ukrainian Studio of TV Films. The film depicts the horrors of the Nazi occupation of Ukraine and the massacre of Jewish people during the Holocaust at Babi Yar, where they were buried in a mass grave outside of Kiev. The film is a historical account of events and warns nations about the dangers of Neo-Nazi ideologies around the world, especially in the United States. The events are told from the perspective of Ukrainian-Jewish poet Vitaly Korotich through voice over that is intertwined with survivor testimonies and archival footage.

Fascism in Ukraine, Part 1 – Professor Barry Lituchy – Professor Barry Lituchy speaks at the Left Forum in 2015 on the history of fascism in Ukraine up to the present day.

Fascism in Ukraine, Part 2 – Comrade Kayla Popuchet from the PCUSA – Comrade Kayla Popuchet of the PCUSA speaks on Midwestern Marx with an analysis of contemporary fascism in Ukraine.

The Special Military Operation in Ukraine

The Communist Vol. II, “Fighting Fascism in Ukraine” narration – The Peoples School for Marxist-Leninist Studies presents a reading of “Is it Justifiable to Fight Fascism in Ukraine?” from the Russian Communist Workers Party (RCWP), as published in Volume II of The Communist.

Overview of One Year of War in Ukraine Part 1 – This class gives an overview of events in the first year of the Special Military Operation in Ukraine. We touch on important flashpoints, such as the US sabotage of the Nordstream 2 pipeline.

Overview of One Year of War in Ukraine Part 2 – The second half of our class on the first year of the war in Ukraine! Covering events from the Nordstream 2 sabotage up to the present day, as well as presenting vital maps and statistics on the conflict so we can better understand how this war is going for everyone involved.

Bonus: Ultraleftism In Our Time class – This class will be on the trends of the ultraleft in our time, and how it harms the communist movement, including a trend within the international communist movement to oppose the special military operation.

Additionally, be sure to look out for our class coming up concluding the History of U.S. Imperialism series, “The Fall of American Unipolarity” which will of course touch on the American relationship with Ukraine’s fascist government and how this war is going for the American imperialists as it drags on and yields low results while the situation in the Middle East takes attention.

As we have stated before, the PSMLS and the sponsor of our school, the PCUSA, stand with those fighting the war against Ukrainian fascism, and we seek to explain the history of Ukrainian fascism. There is a history that goes back nearly a century of Ukrainian nationalism and collaboration with Nazis and more that matters and should be understood by everybody before they evaluate the current war. We do our best to sum up that history and explain the rise of the current Ukrainian fascist state we see today.
